babar's theme ii: march of the wunderkinder

one of the early songs was titled Babar's Theme I and I know you've been waiting patiently for niban. well, wait no longer, wunderkinder!

rainmaker

inside the igloo
umbrellas lick the blubber
just as puppies dance

that's a haiku I just wrote. it has nothing to do with this song.

the state of the kitty

I think I've reached a point where I won't be adding any more equipment for a while, so I figured I'd post some newer pics of the setup. but only new stuff.

top middle (green) is the Malekko Heavy Industry Echo 600 Dark analog delay pedal. bottom middle is the Tech 21 Blonde amp emulator, which allows me to play guitar direct into the board and sound like I'm playing through a Fender amp.

the only new one is the white one on the bottom row, the Lovepedal Vibe.

I also got another guitar... which means no more new stuff for a while. but I think I'm pretty happy with this setup. I may want another synthesizer at some point, but I can wait.

magic carpet made of glue

hey! sorry for no updates. a lot has been happening, but in somewhat different directions than before. some things were recorded, but abandoned. I'll try to post more content in the coming days. anyways, here's a new one.

birding

so this is the finished product of the song mentioned on the 11th. I recorded a guitar track to put on top of it and it seems much fuller. no real beat, though, so maybe we'll have to commission a remix for this one.

rah rah rah

I recorded a couple of tracks tonight, but the song doesn't feel finished so I'm not going to post it. tak that, señor.

also I got a couple more devi ever fuzz pedals: the 33 (aka silver crank), which does this harsh decay thing, and the destructo noctavia, which is wild and squealy. so that's fun times.

as always, we at whistling kitty value your patronage.

sit back down now

hey, activity! I'm trying to get back to some sort of regularity. you can take that however you want.

this one's kind of... happy. fluffy, maybe. I don't know if it's even a keeper, but it's something.

sing

This one is a cover. To me, it's a Carpenters song, but to others it may be more of a Sesame Street thing. For info on the song, you can read at wikipedia.

I'll get back to doing my stuff soon enough, but if you have ideas for songs to "cover", feel free to comment.

time for a commercial break

this one was born of frustration. my computer must've overheard a mac commercial or something because it decided to become a stereotype. I was, however, able to recover it enough to be usable and to record this. which of course made me feel much better. music for the soul.

+1 tv trays

So this is the current state of the setup.

I probably won't buy much more for a while. maybe a delay pedal or another fuzz, but nothing major. I need to learn to use this stuff now.

Recent additions:
- a "4ms" noise swash that some guy on ebay built for me
- the synthesizer.cz platonic world numnine synth
- 2 shure sm-57 mics
- 3 small clip-on beyerdynamic instrument mics

armpit migration

this one's not very melodic. but what do you expect from a track called armpit migration?

someone's space, I suppose

I made a myspace for the band, even though it seems like the only people left on myspace are the bands. but every band needs a myspace because all the other bands have a myspace.

http://www.myspace.com/whistlingkitty

I should add that the myspace will be useless if you follow the blog, because I won't be putting new stuff up there very often.

wear your hair there

this one's like a totally chill techno track, but with a ton of feedback and junk on top of it. it's kind of messed up. if I owned any decent mics, I may have tried to add a guitar or vocal line... but we can always do that later.

I'm assuming no one had problems with divshare, so we're going to give that another shot. there are a couple others we can try if this one ends up sucking.

streaming test

this is not a new track - it's the last one I posted - this is just testing the streaming through divshare. you should be able to stream in the player or click on the divshare link in the player to go to the download page.

networking

does whistling kitty need a myspace, virb, something? I'm content with just the blog but I thought I'd ask you. are you content with downloading the tracks through mediafire or would you prefer some streaming? I'm open to suggestions.

also, if you have anything you'd like to contribute to whistling kitty - music, artwork, remixes, mashups, whatever - just say so, eh?

me & julio operating a trash compactor

uh oh. 8 days without a post. blogs die when that happens. sorry guys.

I had been recording using audacity, but it had certain qualities that were a bit annoying. so today I tried to learn how to use a different program - reaper. there's definitely more of a learning curve than with audacity, but I'm getting parts of it figured out. anyways, here's a song I recorded today.

it's not as crazy and abrasive as a lot of the stuff I've put up here. it's still no paul simon, though.

velociraptor waltz

this one's different. it's ummm... house? one take, I just started a beat and started twisting knobs and stuff. it's almost 7 minutes long, too. but you won't notice.

I wasn't planning on recording tonight but I just kind of got into a groove and out it came.

bleed lively

I got an old stereo flanger pedal on ebay for $15 and that showed up today, so of course I had to play with it. so here's a new song.

Whistling Kitty - Bleed Lively

a guiding light

this is kind of silly since just yesterday I was mumbling to myself about the absurdity of people saying things like "you'll like it" to other people. so these aren't really recommendations as much just stuff I like. I don't know what you will like.

two albums I like:
1. tim hecker - an imaginary country.
2. shogun kunitoki - vinonaamakasio.

yves st pretend

I got a new fuzz pedal in the mail today, the Devi Ever OK, so I was playing around with it tonight and this is basically the closest thing to a song I got, so I figured I go ahead and post it. the levels didn't come out great and there's not really a lot happening, but whatever.

visualization

zach asked, "can we get some artwork for the yodeling kitties?" and we most certainly do not want to disappoint our readers.

as is the case with the majority of my original drawings, this one was done with crayons on construction paper.

tv dinner trays

setup as of may 4, 2009. since one aspect of this blog is to chart the progress of the project, I thought maybe I should also chart the equipment being used to make the sounds.

grand and true

there's quite a bit going on in this one. some whistling. some (kaossilator) trumpet through a wah-wah pedal. some rumbling and breathing. a bass drum that's just a little off the beat.

Whistling Kitty - Grand and True

babar's theme I

I added quite a bit to the setup this week, but it was all boring stuff - a mixing board, a usb audio interface, cables, power adapters... but now I can record with a gajillion times better quality AND I can run the kaoss through an effects loop.

so of course we have a new song. be careful with your eardrums on this one, eh?

we are original

good news. according to last.fm, we're the only band called whistling kitty. that's a huge relief.

frogboarding

my first purchase for the project was the korg kaossilator. it's relatively easy to use and is fun to play, which may be important for keeping our heads in this game.

I've only had it for a few days, but I made a beat this afternoon I liked and wanted to save. I haven't bought any recording equipment yet, so I tried to record it through my computer's microphone input. so that's why it's all distorted and nasty sounding. well, it sounded a little nasty before, but the computer made it really nasty. so you can listen and say, "Oooh that song is nasty."

Whistling Kitty - Frogboarding

hellos

this is the beginning. we are going to try to make sounds.

I'm going to treat this like a collective even though right now it's just me. so if you want to make sounds of whistling cats and wah-wahed trumpets, you can join in. also, feel free to remix stuff and we can post that here too.
